THE "CLEAN AT SEPHORA" LIST & WHY IT MATTERS

If you're familiar with "Clean at Sephora" then you can understand why we at LILY + MIEL found it so important to follow these guidelines when creating our own product line.

What does it mean to be "CLEAN"anyway? Well, good question! There are no set guidelines for a company to consider itself to be clean, so following a list of what not to use by a well respected company was extremely beneficial for us when formulating the ingredients for our products.

So what are the guidelines? Here is their list of the ingredients to avoid or restrict at certain levels in order to be considered "Clean at Sephora", and a list we strive to follow:

  • Aluminum Salts
  • Animal Musk's/Fats/Oils (excluding beeswax/honey)
  • Benzophenones and related compounds
  • Butoxyethanol
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
  • Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (0.1% or less)
  • Carbon Black or Black 2
  • Coal Tar
  • ​Ethanolamines
  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing agents
  • Hydroquinone
  • Lead and Lead Acetate
  • Mercury and Mercury Compounds (Thimerisol)
  • Methoxyethanol
  • Methyl Cellosolve
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone
  • Mineral Oil
  • Nanomaterials (restricted use)
  • Oxybenzone
  • Parabens
  • Petrolatum and Paraffin (restricted use)
  • Phenoxyethanol (1% or less)

  • Plastic Microbeads (restricted use)
  • Polyacrylamide and Acrylamide
